Engaging with activities that bring mastery, joy, and social connection [during COVID-19]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we are all experiencing unprecedented disruptions in our lives. Social distancing guidelines place limits on how we can spend our time—for many, navigating these new routines may manifest in feelings of anxiety, sadness, and social isolation. Fortunately, clinical science offers evidence-based strategies to cope with this “new normal.” Behavioral activation, a skill from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) that focuses on increasing positive, values-based activities, may be a particularly helpful skill. In this webinar, clinical science doctoral students Franckie Castro-Ramirez and Katherine Corteselli will lead a discussion about how to incorporate values-based activities into your routine during this time of stress and uncertainty.

We are looking for a small group of undergraduate students to participate in a 30-45 minute webinar on 4/10 at 3:30 PM EST. Interactive participation and sharing of how behavioral activation strategies might be practiced during the pandemic will be encouraged. The new (and changing) normal:A discussion about how clinical science can help us navigate our lives during the COVID-19 pandemic

With the COVID-19 pandemic, we are in an unprecedented time filled with anxiety and uncertainty - will I or my loved ones get sick? When will this end? What will life look like tomorrow, next week, and next month? The list of examples of how anxiety and stress may manifest as we navigate this "new normal" within the COVID-19 outbreak is long. Looking to clinical science, however, may offer us empirically supported strategies to cope with these stressful new questions and realities. Becca Shingleton, Ph.D. (Clinical Psychologist and Lecturer in the Psychology department) and Kate Bentley, Ph.D. (Clinical Psychologist at MGH and Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School) will lead a discussion about evidence-based tools and strategies that may be used in day-to-day life to help manage during this extremely challenging time. Specific concepts and tools discussed will include consideration of the adaptive nature of emotions, acceptance, mindfulness and present-focused awareness, cognitive flexibility, and values-based activity scheduling. Interactive participation and sharing of how these (and other) strategies might be (or continue to be) practiced during the pandemic will be encouraged.
